Rail maintenance work has been carried out at Newport in Melbourne’s west for over 130 years. In 2016, Downer completed a $7.5 million upgrade to the site, including the installation of a Portal Wheel Lathe to service train wheelsets for all three rail gauges used by Australian networks. The extensive two year upgrade created 84 new jobs over the program, transforming the historic site into a leading rail services delivery centre for bogies, wheelsets and engine overhauls.
